What is the Knitting Dictionary?

Knitting books, patterns, posts and conversations have a language of their own. Have you ever wondered, ” What does this word mean?” Wonder no more, just check out the Knitting Dictionary to see.

What to expect over the next few months

Over the next few months, I will add a post for each letter.

OK, sometimes a post may contain more than one letter: there aren’t a lot of knitting terms that start with a “Q, an “X” or a “Z”.

Other letters may require more than one post. There are a lot of knitting related words starting with a “C” or an “S,” for example.

Why a Knitting Dictionary is Necessary

In general, you will get one post per letter. Keep checking back as this online knitting dictionary grows!

Learning to knit is not inherently difficult. You don’t need to know many terms to start knitting. If you want to progress past the beginner stage, you need to expand your skills and you need to learn a new vocabulary. That is what this dictionary is all about. As with any terminology that has grown outside of a strictly academic setting, most of the terms are not universal. I have done a lot of research to make sure that the terms that I have defined are generally understood, but there are always variations.

I have attempted to make this list as complete as possible, but will continue to expand the dictionary. If there is a term missing, please leave a comment.

IMPORTANT NOTE: While many of these definitions have a clear and specific meaning, individual designers and writers may use any of these terms to mean something different. ALWAYS CHECK the pattern, book or resource to see how the particular writer or designer is using the term.
